PHOTOTRANSFORMATIONS I

These images are from a larger series of images based on transformation through repetition. On this page are a series based on cobblestones and on a small section of a photo of a person. On the next page are a series based on photographs of a fence and another of footprints in the sand.

My first foray into digital imaging was with a 3MP Canon Powershot G1 camera. In my earlier photographic life (see NYC Street People), I had used mostly 35mm film cameras and done the processing myself. I was impressed with the convenience and rapidity of digital photography, but found I was unable to make satisfactory prints, at least not by my old 35mm film standards. So I began to tweak the images on the computer, at first hoping only to improve them, but eventually realizing that once the files were on my hard drive, I could do anything I wanted with them.

Even in my early film days, as a high school student, I was driven to experiment with image transformation at the processing stage. This series represents my exploration of repetition and combination of common objects and their evolution into new forms -- my first effort to boldly go where no film, at least in my hands, had gone before. These were the precursors to my Flower Mandala images.
