NYC STREET PEOPLE I

These images are selected from a collection of New York City street photos I took in Manhattan and Brooklyn from 1974 to 1979. They were intended to accompany a book of stories based on my interviews with street vendors, pimps, prostitutes, bag ladies, thieves, bums, and other occupants of and participants in the New York City street scene. I was in my early 20s and considered myself to be a correspondent to the middle classes, trying to show the human side of New York's underside.

See the next Street People gallery for the somewhat strange publication history of this project, as well as a link to the stories that accompany these photographs.
