NYC STREET PEOPLE II

The non-publication of this work has an interesting history. In 1977, the Scribners, which had published some of my own literary heroes, including Ernest Hemingway, Thomas Wolfe, and F. Scott Fitzgerald, was prepared to offer me a contract, subject to the approval of Charles Scribner III, who had recently taken over as head of the company. On his return from a trip to London, Scribner is reported by my editor-to-be to have looked at my images and manuscript and said, "Such a book should never be published."

Ten years later, I submitted the manuscript and an extended outline to a French publisher, who accepted it for publication and paid me an advance. I was to be part of a new series of “outsider” authors. However, that deal also fell through when the editor of the series, who I later learned had bipolar disorder, left Paris. The manuscript languished, half translated, for two years, when a new editor took over and acquired a new round of authors.

Thus far, Scribner’s sentiments about publishing this work have been honored. However, you can download the stories yourself on the LINKS page.
